The Evaluation of Anorectal Methotrexate Chemotherapy on Failure of Previous Treatment for Cervical Cancer

Abstract
Patients with advanced cancer of uterine cervix have a poor prognosis, with a 5-year survival rate of 10%~30% in FIGO. Surgical procedures or radiotherapy are much less effective in the treatment of advanced or recurrent cervical cancer. In
patients
with advanced or recurrent disease who cannot be helped by surgery or radiotherapy the anal submucosal injection of methotrexate continue to improve the efficacy of cytotoxic therapy. 14 Patients of admanced cancer of the uterine cervix treated
with
methtrexate administered by the submucosal anal route. Each course consists of five injections, 5 days; each injection contains 100 mg of methotrexate. The course was repeated at 3 week intervals. Overall response was 42% (6 patients) including 4
patients with complete response. And mean survival time was 22.6 months for response group and 14.3 months for non-response group. Side effects were bone marrow depression in 3 cases, constipation in 3 cases, stomatitis in 2 cases and nausea &
vomiting
in 1 case. This study demonstrates that anal injection of methotrexate is effective in the treatment of the advanced cervical cancer. And it is safe, well tolerated.
